Biosafety: An Explanatory Guide to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

Denmark together with EU has decided to support the preparation of an Explanatory Guide to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. The project is being carried out by the IUCN Environmental Law Centre and the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD).

The aim of the Guide is to facilitate understanding of the legal obligations of Parties under the Protocol and to assist in capacity building and raise awareness of the Protocol with the hope of speeding up its ratification and implementation.

Work on the Guide commenced in January 2001. A small team of authors has been constituted to serve as the core group for the preparation of the Guide. Drafts of the Guide will be presented and reviewed at two or three international workshops during 2001/2002, and comments will also be sought through extensive mail consultations.

It is envisaged that the Guide will be published in the IUCN ELP Series, which includes the Guide to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The work is being coordinated by Françoise Burhenne-Guilmin (fburhenne@elc.iucn.org).
