PEER: Partnership for European Environmental Research

Through the PEER initiative, five major European environmental research centres have agreed to combine forces to strengthen and structure the scientific basis for environmental policy in Europe. The centres cover all fields of environmental sciences, focusing on the interaction between man and the environment.

The specific aim of the PEER initiative is to develop a strategic framework for the advancement of environmental science in support of both national and EU policies, as well as to enhance integration of European environmental research databases and hence promote their interpretation and exploitation.

The centres will seek close co-operation with DG Research, DG Environment, the European Environment Agency and the EEA’s European Topic Centres.

The centres under the PEER initiative together encompass a total staff of 3,000 persons and an annual budget of 200 million Euro.
