Environmental assistance: 10th anniversary of Danish-Russian environmental cooperation celebrated
On 4 October 2002, the Danish Ministry of the Environment celebrated the 10th anniversary of Danish-Russian environmental cooperation in St Petersburg with the presentation of selected environmental projects carried out by Danish and Russian enterprises with Danish financial support. Since 1992, approximately 150 environmental projects have received support totalling approximately DKK 470 million. Russia is presently the largest single recipient of Danish environmental assistance. Significant results have been achieved with regard to wastewater treatment, drinking water quality, waste management and nature protection.
Many environmental tasks remain to be tackled though, for example, the remediation of a major chemical waste depository outside St Petersburg and improvement of the drinking water in Kaliningrad. Agreement has also been reached to support an overall waste plan for the whole of the Leningrad region and for reforms of the Russian environmental legislation. High priority is also accorded to implementation of the EU’s water initiative for the former Soviet states that was adopted at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, and to implementation of selected environmental conventions.
