The Wadden Sea: A particularly sensitive sea area (PSSA)
The Dutch, German and Danish Wadden Sea has been designated as a PSSA. This was agreed on at a meeting in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in October.

The Wadden Sea is the 5th designated PSSA worldwide, but the first designated on the basis of a joint application by three states and the first in Europe. Other PSSAs are e.g. the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, and the area “Around the Florida Keys”, United States.

European marine environment strategy
The Danish Presidency of the EU and European Commission invite to a conference on the development of an European Strategy for Protection and Conservation of the Marine Environment. It will be held in Køge, Denmark 4-6th of December 2002.

International Local Agenda 21 Conference
On 4–6 November 2002 Denmark will host an international conference to follow up on the UN Summit in Johannesburg, among other things focussing on the European partnerships to promote sustainable development. The conference is being organized jointly by the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI), the City of Kolding, the organizations Local Government Denmark, Danish Regions and Green Network, and the Ministry of the Environment.

Conference “European Cities in a Global Era. Urban Identities and Regional Development”
As part of the Danish EU Presidency, the Ministry of the Environment is hosting an international conference on the significance of globalization for the European towns and their identity and for regional development. The conference consists of workshops, study trips in Greater Copenhagen and the Øresund Region, as well as presentations by international scientists. The conference is being organized by the Spatial Planning Department, Ministry of the Environment, in cooperation with the foundation Fonden Realdania and the Danish Town Planning Institute, and is combined with the official, international opening of the urban town and housing exhibition “Copenhagen X”. During the conference the Danish Minister for the Environment will present the Copenhagen Charter, which is the Danish EU Presidency’s contribution to the ongoing discussion on future urban and regional development in the EU.
