Pesticides: New Danish pesticide action plan

The Danish Government has submitted its Pesticide Action Plan 2004–2009 for public hearing. In contrast to the earlier action plans, the Pesticide Action Plan 2004–2009 does not solely focus on agricultural use of pesticides, but has been extended to also encompass market gardeners and fruit growers, as well as pesticide use by the public sector and homeowners.

The aim of the plan is to reduce consumption of pesticides in order to protect health and the environment. A number of specific goals and measures are proposed. Great importance is accorded to getting pesticide users to implement the existing knowledge about the possibilities to reduce pesticide consumption. Among other things, regulations will be introduced to ensure that the filling and cleaning of spraying equipment does not lead to groundwater contamination. Finally, more information campaigns will be carried out directed at farmers and homeowners. Protection of the groundwater and minimization of the content of pesticide residues in foods are accorded high priority in the plan.

The hearing lasts until 27 August 2003. The Danish and English versions of the final plan will be placed on the Danish EPA’s website: http://www.mst.dk.
