Oil spill sensitivity Atlas regarding environment and wildlife in the South- and West Greenland coastal zone
The National Environmental Research Institute, NERI, has headed the extension of a detailed oil spill sensitivity atlas regarding environment and wildlife off South- and West Greenland. The Atlas enables oil companies and authorities to incorporate environmental considerations into oil spill contingency plans as well as facilitating environmental impact assessments of exploration and development plans. The Atlas can also be useful to local authorities and others, who need to know more about the environment and wildlife in the South- and West Greenland coastal zone.
The atlas provides an overview of such aspects as the occurrence of wildlife, human resource use (fishing and hunting) and archaeological sites that are particularly sensitive to oil spill. Furthermore it contains information regarding the physical environment - coastal types, ocea-no-graphy, climate, ice conditions - logistics and oil spill response methods. It covers the West Greenland coastal zone between 58º and 72º N. The Atlas contains data from already existing databases to which access until now has been difficult as well as brand new data. The data are presented on maps scale 1:250,000.
