New Danish Minister for the Environment

After the Danish cabinet shuffle on 2 August, Connie Hedegaard has replaced Hans Christian Schmidt as Minister for the Environment. Conservative Party member Connie Hedegaard - 43 years old and MA(History) - was MP in 1984-90, and, having served i.a. as political spokeswoman, she left active politics in 1990 to engage in a career as journalist at the leading newspaper Berlingske Tidende, as head of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation news bulletin, and latest, as host of the DR2 TV debate programme “Deadline”. She has also been president or member of a number of international organisations focussing on politics, information, culture and education. In addition, she has been a regular columnist at the daily newspaper Politiken.

Connie Hedegaard sees the environment as a conservative focus area, and believes that we need to find the balance between environmental considerations and the market.

Danish legislation on the environment empowers the authorities to intervene whenever the environment is at risk, and Connie Hedegaard intends to use these powers fully, for instance in connection with the operation of pig farms. To get a clear picture of how the various environmental regulation tools available are used, she will cooperate with experts in environmental law and with authorities, the police and the public prosecutor, to review and improve the use of the enforcement tools.
